King Elementary students pay attention to teacher about planting

Students at King Elementary School spent time learning about gardening and caring for plants on May 6, 2026, thanks to a spring planting initiative from Wello.

Wello, a local non-profit organization that supports community wellness initiatives, provided soil, compostable pots, and the Green Bay Botanical Garden provided seeds.

About 130 students from various grade levels planted lime basil and purple basil. Teachers plan to have students take care of the plants before they eventually plant them in their school garden. Some of the plants may go home with students to care for with their families.

“The goal is to create a full-circle educational experience that connects students directly to the harvest lifecycle,” representatives from Wello said. “Through Spring Planting, students will have the opportunity to plant edible seeds with their own hands and learn about the growing process.”

This was just one of many Farm to School opportunities students and staff participate in in the Green Bay Area Public School District.
